THOUGHTS
AND ADVENTURES is a collection of essays by Churchill
on various subjects, which had appeared previously in
periodicals. The book was first published in 1932 by
Thornton Butterworth, and is readily identified by its
olive brown cloth.The first
edition is not scarce, but fine copies seldom
seen, and dustwrappers very scarce. All subsequent
impressions of the first edition are bound
in a dark green. The
American
first edition was titled AMID THESE STORMS,
published by Scribners 1932 in the same fade-prone red
cloth as A ROVING COMMISSION.
Thornton
Butterworth re-issued the book in its Keystone
Library, later in the 1930's and these are
the best chance for a pre-war dustwrapper. Like MY EARLY
LIFE. it was later reprinted by Macmillan
and Odhams
Press. There were no US reprints other than
those from specialist library publishers. These are
scarce, although I occasionally can offer the edition
from Ayer
Publishers. The title was out of print for
many years until Leo
Cooper released a new edition in 1990, which
also was licensed for the Norton
hardback in the USA, and the Mandarin paperback,
the first and only paperback edition.
