| The
fourth volume of post war speeches (1951-52) appeared
in 1953, with the Cassell first edition in maroon cloth
and the series black jacket. 5500 copies of STEMMING
THE TIDE were printed but not all bound at the time,
resulting in two distinct issues. The first is most
easily identified by the maroon colour along the top
and bottom edges of the dustwrapper. The later
state has solid black dustwrapper with no
stripes, advertising a 1961 book on the dj flap. This
first issue of STEMMING THE TIDE has now become the
priciest of the series. The American
edition was the last for Houghton Mifflin,
only 1850 copies make this scarce, but fortunately less
demanded than the English.
