Thornton Butterworth, London, 1923-1931, The original work appeared from 1923-27 as 3 volumes published in 4 by Thornton Butterworth: Vol I: 1911-1914; Vol II: 1915; Vols III, IV: 1916-1918 in two parts. Subsequently in 1929, a further volume (4 or 5) appeared as The Aftermath. Then still later in 1931 a final supplementary volume was published The Eastern Front ( or The Unknown War) .An impressive set, uniformly bound in smooth navy blue cloth, gilt title on spine and blind stamped titles on front cover. Numerous maps and plans, some folding and coloured. The only illustrations are 8 photos of key personalities in the final volume. Large attractive books, 6 x 9 inches, this first English edition is much preferred over the American. The books are all correct first editions with very attractive covers and spines, having been protected by dustwrappers. Vol. I has some moderate edge spotting, the others have clean edges. Vol 6 shows some flaking of the publisher name at base of spine, others all have shiny gilt. I originally purchased most of these violumes back in 1993 at a London bookfair. The dustwrappers are all correct for first printings, and have the usual belmishes, spines darkened with losses at spine ends. The vol 3 jacket also has lost a triangular pice at top left of rear cover and vol 4 has a large loss at base of spine and also a strip along top left of spine. Full disclosure: The spine of the Eastern Front dj is a colour photo copy. The other five panels are well worn originals. Overall VG-F books in G-VG DJs. (A31ab). Item #35395
